Who we are

Ashmun Workshop is a fine woodworking shop established in 2016 by artists J.B. Morton and Ella Wearing. We specialize in conservation picture framing with distinctive mouldings and finishes, designed and made in-house by the two of us.

Refined woodworking and finishing

Our frames begin as rough lumber, mostly U.S domestic hardwoods, such as maple, walnut, white oak and cherry, which are milled and selected at our wood shop in Orient Point, Long Island. Our profiles range from simple stem to bespoke hand planed and carved. We use a variety of oils, waxes, stains and paints, often custom made from raw pigments, and applied by hand.

Care and preservation

The care with which we handle artwork is of the utmost importance - while we strive to make frames that are beautiful and complimentary to the objects they house, our ultimate responsibility is to serve the preservation of the artworks and objects that are brought to us.

Once woodworking and finishing are complete, we are ready to start the fitting process at our studio at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in NYC. Artworks are hinged to museum standard pH neutral cotton rag boards, adhered with rice starch and Japanese paper - a time tested and reversible archival method. As well as using acid-free materials, our glass and plexi options always contain UV filtering to support further protection of the artwork.

Working with us

We are constantly adding to our range of moulding and finish options, all of which can be adapted to fit your project.

To get in touch, please email us at: contact@ashmunworkshop.com. We are happy to give approximate base rate quotations if you provide us with some details about your project - artwork dimensions and a description/image are a good starting point.

We welcome you to visit us by appointment at our studio in Brooklyn. Here you will be able to view our samples alongside your artwork. If you are unable to meet with us in person, and wish to mail us your artwork, we can continue to correspond via email or video to discuss framing options.

Alternatively, let us know if your project requires an on-site visit or you would prefer for us to bring a selection of samples to you. We are able to do visits/pickups/deliveries/installs within the NYC metro and Long Island areas.

We look forward to working with you!
